The jewel in Doncaster’s crown is its racecourse. Home to the St Leger festival, going to the races is one of the most exciting ways to spend a day in this South Yorkshire town. Last month I attended the races for a day and afterwards we were treated to a show by Brian Wilson of Beach Boys fame, but September is the most important month in the races’ calendar.
Fun, fizz, fashion and friendship – that’s what going to the races is all about! Yes you can win (or lose) a small fortune, but for me, it’s about getting together with my girls, searching for the perfect outfit and getting glammed-up for the day.
This year I’ve kindly been invited to Doncaster Races for the St Leger weekend and I’m taking my sister with me. As I work in a school I can’t make the DFS Ladies Day (Thursday 13th September 2018) but I will be attending on the Saturday, which is the official St Leger Day (Saturday 15th September 2018).
I’ve been having so much fun preparing for the event. I was invited to go outfit-hunting at Coast in Sheffield’s Meadowhall with fellow bloggers Tracey and Jennifer which also included a glass of bubbly and some gorgeous little treats.
I had so much fun looking through the dresses at Coast – it’s not a shop I’ve ever really thought about before as I presumed it was mostly for wedding-guest or prom dresses, but it turns out I was wrong! The shop does sell a huge range of stunning clothes perfect for weddings, but it also has lots of options for posh events and more casual affairs.
We sipped on fizz while we looked around – we had the store to ourselves and the staff were really helpful and lovely, letting us take as much time as we liked to try on outfits and answering any questions we had. I don’t get dressed up that often, so I went out of my comfort zone and tried on anything I liked the look of, from a bright green bodycon to a polka dot off-the-shoulder dress.
I finally decided on a stunning black jumpsuit, the Harley Jumpsuit (£99). As it’s black, I’m going to match it with some nude heels and a brightly coloured bag. I love the off-the-shoulder detail and as well as being super-flattering… IT HAS POCKETS! I can’t wait to wear this and I’ll be posting photos from the day on my Instagram.
A lot of girls get their hair and make-up done the morning before the races, but I’m planning on a pamper sesh with my sister instead, and making the most of her hair curling skills! I’ll be using my trusty Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation as it lasts all day (I used it on my wedding day and it didn’t budge!) Hopefully the weather will be kind as I think a raincoat would cramp my style slightly…
I’ve just had my nails done and I’ll be applying a fresh layer of fake tan ready for the day; we’re also planning on going for a Races Breakfast in the morning to line our stomachs! I can’t wait to drink some fizz, place some bets and have some laughs at the Doncaster Races…will you be going?
If you want to join in on the fun you can buy tickets here. There are a range of tickets and packages available, so there’s something to fit all budgets. The William Hill St Leger Festival takes place from 12-15 September 2018. DFS Ladies Day is Thursday 13 September and will see Martin Kemp performing a DJ set after the day of racing.
*I have been gifted a ticket to Doncaster Races and an outfit from Coast in exchange for this post, but all races love my own*
