Recently YO! Sushi has been re-opened in Meadowhall, Sheffield. It has a newly refurbished dining space and a mouth-watering new street-food inspired menu, so I was thrilled to be invited to review the new YO!
What is YO! Sushi in Meadowhall like?
If you haven’t been to YO! Sushi before, then here’s a little information about how it works. Unlike traditional restaurants, all of the cold dishes are on a rotating belt; simply grab what you fancy, when you fancy it! You can take as much time as you want and the dishes are colour-coded by price, so you can keep an eye on how much you’re spending.
If you want to order a hot dish, all you need to do is press the button on your table and a server will appear like magic to take your order! All the food comes really quickly so you can order whenever you feel like it and you avoid being stuck to a rigid order like you are in most restaurants.
YO! likes to make eating simple: everything you need is already on your table including cutlery (and if you can’t use chopsticks they have you covered, but the ones at YO! are surprisingly easy to use), soy sauce, pickles, wasabi, plates and unlimited still or sparkling water. It really impressed me how easy it all was; you’re essentially left alone to enjoy yourself until you press your button, and the staff are incredibly attentive and enthusiastic about the food they serve.
What about the food?
Well, as my husband and I walked towards the restaurant we knew we were in for a treat. It smelt AMAZING. I love Japanese food, and I also love trying anything new. My husband, on the other hand, isn’t quite the same. He was a little reluctant that YO! wouldn’t cater to his tastes but it turns out there is something for everyone, whether you enjoy spicy food and noodles, sushi or chicken sandwiches!
If there is seafood on the menu, that’s usually what I’ll go for so I had to try the Spicy Seafood Udon (see image above). It was very good: spicy, but not too hot and packed with prawns, squid and Scottish salmon. My husband chose most of his dishes from the brand new street-food menu, including Chicken Karaage (fried chicken marinated in soy and sake served with mayo) and the superb Furikake Fries (Japanese style fries coated in sriracha mayo and sprinkled with yuzu furikake, sesame, aonori and smoky bonito flakes). Just look at them!
The YO! staple is their Katsu Curry; I’ve never had a curry like it before – it’s much sweeter than most and I personally prefer it to most Indian-style curries. We tried both the Prawn and the Pumpkin Katsu Curry, and though I am a huge prawn fan, I have truly never tried anything as delicious as the Pumpkin. If you go to YO! and you want to try something new, I highly recommend you try the Pumpkin Katsu Curry; I’ll be visiting again if only to eat this dish from the Gods again…
Dessert-wise, YO! isn’t the best, but it really isn’t their forte. I had the Strawberry Cheesecake Mochi which are sweet rice balls with a strawberry cheesecake centre, and they were nice, but personally I’d rather stick with savoury at YO! as they do it so well.
YO! Sushi is located upstairs on Park Lane in Meadowhall, Sheffield and you can find the full menu here.
