Weddings: The first five things you should do when you get engaged

what to do when you are engaged

Congratulations, you’re engaged! You’ve found the love of your life, they’ve popped the question, and you couldn’t be happier.

Amidst the excitement, you may be wondering what to do next. Well, before you start choosing the colour scheme, the dessert menu and THE DRESS, there are some important things you should do first.

Tell your parents

Before you post pictures of your engagement ring all over Instagram and before you update your relationship status on Facebook, pick up the phone and tell your parents. It is surprising how easy it is to forget to tell your nearest and dearest, but they’d much rather hear it from you than through the social media grapevine! I was in Dublin when I got engaged, and I’m really stingy when it comes to using my phone abroad, but I still made sure I text my immediate family (after I calmed down and had a pint, anyway).

Pop open the bubbly

If there is ever a time to pop open a bottle of bubbly, it’s now! I had been up for about 24 hours when I got engaged (early flight, being a tourist) so we had some beers before passing out in the hotel, but if you are a bit more awake, order that champagne!

Go out for dinner and talk about wedding aspirations

Go out for a romantic meal and spend the evening talking about wedding dreams and aspirations, get excited and see what you both come up with. Planning a wedding is fun, and it’s all about organising a day personal to you. This is also an ideal time to stare into each others eyes and make the other restaurant guests feel slightly nauseated.

Buy a wedding planner/organiser

You can buy some really gorgeous and helpful wedding planners/organisers depending on your taste and budget. I got this one from notonthehighstreet.com which has some fun sections, including a space to practice your new signature and room to brainstorm creative wedding ideas. I also like the look of this pretty one from Paperchase.

Enjoy it!

Being engaged is a wonderful time, and there’s no need to rush into planning the whole wedding straight away. The average couple is engaged for about 18 months before they get married, some get married sooner, and others take longer; all that matters is that you enjoy it. So pop open that bottle of bubbly, spend some quality time together and enjoy one of the most exciting times of your life.
