Three Sizzling Hot Must-Read Books For Summer

Summer is my favourite time in the world of book publishing. It’s warm, the gin cocktails are out, and it’s officially time for the summer-holiday book releases!

I spoke about the must-read books of 2017 here, but today I’m going to introduce to you three sizzling hot must-read books for summer 2018 – the thriller edition. If you were a fan of Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train and The Wife Between Us, then these twisty psychological crime thrillers should be added to the top of your to-read pile!

The Good Daughter – Karin Slaughter

One ran. One stayed. But who is… the good daughter?

Plot: Twenty-eight years ago, Charlotte and Samantha Quinn’s childhoods were destroyed by a terrifying attack on their family home. It left their mother dead. It left their father – a notorious defence attorney – devastated. And it left the family consumed by secrets from that shocking night…

The Good Daughter is the latest standalone novel from crime queen Karin Slaughter. This is the only Karin Slaughter novel I’ve read, so I was surprised at how violent it was and I found myself having serious nightmares after reading the first chapter before bed. After that I was completely hooked; The Good Daughter is incredibly engrossing, emotional and raw, so much so that I really felt like I was a part of the story and at over-500 pages long, I was sad to say goodbye to the characters of Charlotte and Samantha.

Honestly brilliant: there are no cheap thrills here, just an original plot and great writing.

Cross Her Heart – Sarah Pinborough

WARNING: This book may cause severe sleep deprivation

Plot: Lisa. Ava. Marilyn. Three women, three secrets and a hidden past that could destroy them all. One of these women is living a lie, but who?

When I found out Sarah Pinborough had a new book out, boy was I excited! I absolutely ADORED Behind Her Eyes and I knew that she would not disappoint with her unique imagination. Cross Her Heart is a fast-paced, twisty, unputdownable psycholigical thriller with lots of surprises. Pinborough’s thrillers are fun to read, especially once you get to know her style. I don’t want to reveal too much as it’s the kind of novel that is more enjoyable when you go in blind. Full of shocks, the short chapters are perfect for lazy-day reading in the garden or the beach, and are ideal for those with short-attention spans or frequent breaks to grab another beer from the fridge.

An Unwanted Guest – Shari Lapena

We can’t choose the strangers we meet. Usually we can avoid the people who make us nervous, make us afraid. Until we find ourselves in a situation we can’t escape. Trapped.

Plot: As the guests arrive at beautiful, remote Mitchell’s Inn, they’re all looking forward to a relaxing weekend deep in the forest, miles from anywhere. They watch their fellow guests with interest, from a polite distance. With a violent storm raging, the group finds itself completely cut off from the outside world. Nobody can get in – or out. And then the first body is found… and the horrifying truth comes to light. There’s a killer among them – and nowhere to run.

Shari Lapena is the author of the hugely-popular The Couple Next Door in 2017. An Unwanted Guest is a little different; Shari has combined an Agatha Christie-style plot with a fast-paced thriller, so it’s ideal for both traditional crime lovers and fans of the current ‘domestic-noir’ trend.

Very clever, addictive and suspenseful, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I finished it in one sitting and I don’t want to spoil it so I’ll simply add: READ THIS BOOK.

I hope this encourages you to pick up some new books this summer, I’d love to hear your opinions and any recommendations of your own!
