There’s nothing I love more than a Spa Bath. As I’ve discussed before, a spa can do wonders for your mental health, and though I love a trip to my local spa, it’s not always feasible to spend a lot of money or take time out of our busy schedules to organise a trip.
This is why I am such a huge advocate of the ‘spa bath’; creating the spa experience in your own home and turning your bathroom into a sanctuary for the senses.
I’ve spent the past couple of months testing some of the bath and body products currently available on the market to create a round-up of the BEST products and ideas for creating your very own home-spa. (It was hard work having all those baths, I’m telling ya!)
How to create the perfect spa atmosphere
What takes a normal bath to a home-spa experience is the atmosphere you create. Spas are all about stepping into a relaxing haven away from the stress of everyday life; the sounds, smells and pace of the spa are all there to help you unwind and rest in a tranquil environment.
So, to turn your bathroom into a spa, you need a few things. Firstly, I suggest making sure the room is tidy; it’s hard to imagine you’re in a spa when the floor is littered with laundry or children’s toys, so remove anything that will distract your mind (or cause you to trip over).
When you walk into your spa bathroom, your senses should immediately begin to relax. Sound is important, so I like to download or stream some ‘spa music’. Relaxing music can be found easily on sites like YouTube, simply type in what you fancy. If you’re not sure, just search for spa music – there’s plenty out there! I use these Aqua Bluetooth Speakers every time as they’re easy to use and don’t require plugging in; perfect for the bathroom. You can link them up with your phone, and also IT LIGHTS UP AND SQUIRTS WATER TO THE MUSIC. It looks fab, especially by candlelight, which leads me to the next two wonder-products I’ve found. First up is the Grace Cole Fragrant Candle, which has a warm vanilla and sandlewood scent. It’s one of my favourite candles, very elegant and perfect for some me-time.
The Janjira Candle is actually used for massage, so you can light it and then use it on your body. It smells amazing and can be used as a massage oil, body oil, moisturiser or facial oil! Lastly, what is a spa without a fluffy white robe? This one from The White Company is luxurious and will make you feel like you’re at a five-star resort (almost).
If you can manage to convince or bribe the family to join in, you can get bulk t-shirt printing online and create your own customised spa staff t-shirts! Such fun.
Spa-Worthy Bath Products
The main event is your bath, so make sure you stock up with some luxurious and fun products to take your bath to the next level. I love my baths to smell amazing, so I use products like the Nelson’s Bath & Massage Balm (which can be used to infuse the bath or as oil to massage sore muscles) and the INCREDIBLE Olverum Bath Oil, which uses a blend of essential oils to relax you and soften the skin (it also has a very interesting history). I also love to include bath salts, I actually find Zoella’s bath salts smell lovely but I only buy them if they’re on sale. Instead, I’d suggest going for this tub of Bjork & Berries, which is enriched with hand-picked flowers and herbs from the Björk & Berries gardens in Northern Sweden and has a lavender scent.
I think it’s important to make your me-time fun, so not every product has to be ‘luxury’, it just needs to make you feel good! I LOVE the Floating Rose Bath Lights, you simply pop them in the bath and they light up. It looks lovely.
You can’t have a bath without a bath bomb (yes I do but all of this into one bath – a spa bath is a special occasion!), and my favourite brand is Bomb Cosmetics for their glitter bath blasters.
Nelsons Arnicare Bath & Massage Balm // Bjork & Berries Bath Salts // Egg Bath Bombs // Floating Rose Bath Lights // Bomb Cosmetics Bath Blaster // Laura Mercier Creme Brulee Honey Bath // The Yorkshire Soap Company Soap Macarons // Olverum Bath Oil
I like to cleanse and perform a body scrub as my body treatments. I love the bath and shower gels by Grace Cole; like their candles, their body products smell divine and very luxurious. Bilou is a new brand available at Superdrug with lots of sweet smelling products like Tasty Doughnut and Cotton Candy, and as they’re foam based they make shaving a breeze.
I like to give myself different body scrub ‘treatments’ based on scent and ingredients. I like Urban Veda as you can take a test to determine which of their products are best suited to your skin type, and the Janjira scrubs are incredibly high quality – I like the Thai Lime & Ginger, though for a really nourishing treatment you could go for their Argan Oil scrub.
My favourite scrub is by Lou Lou Belle. Using Himalayan salt, the product is very effective and leaves your body feeling super smooth and fresh which lasts long after you’ve used it. This scrub is preservative free, all natural and it smelsl amazing. If you buy one scrub, make it this one!
I like to use some facial products while I’m having my spa time and these are some of the best ones I’ve come across. You can’t beat 7th Heaven for affordable face masks, and I love the self-heating ones. For something a little more in-depth, the Dr. Levy Switzerland 3 Deep Cell Renewal Micro-Resurfacing Cleanser is a cult product that can be used in three different ways: as a cleanser, as an Intensive Micro-resurfacing cleanse on dry skin and as a Skin-renewing Fast-Mask left on dry skin for five minutes. The Odylique Mask (number 3) is unique in that you use the powder to mix your own mask with water or yogurt.
For deep cleansing, I like to use the Northern Soap by Natura Siberica which is filled with unique properties such as northern herbs and berries that are rich in valuable oils and vitamins and have been used since ancient times for their skin enhancing benefits. I’m also a fan of clay, so I use the L’Oreal Paris Detox Mask.
Now, the Elemis Pro-Collagen Hydra-Gel Eye Masks are pretty pricey so I’d probably only use these on the odd occasion but damn are they good!

After-treatments are all about moisturising and winding-down for the evening. Products like the Lou Lou Belle body oil and the Ted Baker Shimmer Body Souffle are lovely to apply after a warm bath and after exfoliating it’s important to look after your skin by adding back moisture. I always moisturise my face and some of my favourite face products are by Nuxe – French brands tend to be very kind on your skin. If my hair is in need of some moisture I’ll apply an overnight conditioning mask and top it all off with applying some Champneys Heavenly Days Sleep Temple Balm to my pulse points, preparing myself for an amazing night’s sleep.
