Some people go away to put their feet up and relax for a couple of weeks. Get a tan. Drink a few cocktails. Explore some of the local sites. Return home refreshed and ready for work. But that’s not what everyone wants. Some people want to launch themselves from planes with parachutes and others prefer hurtling down mountain sides on skis and snowboards. So for the more adventurous out there, here’s a list of ideal getaways to get your adrenaline pumping.

Paragliding

You climb to the top of a hill. You’re strapped to an instructor and before you know it you’re soaring across the skyline with the birds. Paragliding is one of the more relaxing experiences in an adrenaline addict’s schedule. You coast over beautiful scenery, taking in sights and sounds with the wind running through your hair. Or what it can run through, considering you’ll have a helmet on. There are some beautiful countries to paraglide in. Spain is one of our favorites. Make sure you choose a skilled instructor and feel your troubles drift away.

Skiing

Skiing mini breaks needn’t see you face down in the snow like Bridget Jones. Lessons are usually available for people of all abilities. Little feels better than taking a ski lift to the top of a mountain. Breathing the crisp, fresh air and sliding back to flat ground with elegance and grace. Remember to wear sun cream on your face and around your goggles. This might sound silly, as it’s pretty cold up there. But the white snow does a pretty good job of reflecting the sun’s rays and believe it or not, you can easily get burnt. Other than that, wrap up warm and relax with a mug of hot chocolate at the end of a long day’s exercise. Try out St Anton, check into Mayrhofen or explore Meribel. All are beautiful locations that you’ll almost definitely want to return to.

Bungee Jumping

This is for the thrill seekers out there. Bungee jumping isn’t for the faint hearted, so think long and hard before signing up to this one. Now you can bungee in most countries. But there are some with especially astounding views and scenery. Choose a trusted and recommended company to help you with the jump. Kawarau Bridge in New Zealand will see you dive head first towards crystal blue waters. Victoria Falls Bridge lies at the border of Zimbabwe and has stunning scenery. If you’re feeling really brave, the highest bungee opportunity is from Macau Tower in China. This one will see you drop 233m, so relax, take in the view and remember to breathe.

White Water Rafting

If you plan to try this one out, prepare to get soaked. A day of white water rafting will see you paddling the rapids with your friends and professional instructors. So where’s best for this energetic activity? Well, we’re rather fond of the Colorado River at the Grand Canyon. This is a site to behold and hundreds of thousands flock to see it every year. You will travel through Colorado, Utah and Arizona. Another tourist hotspot is the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe. With water falls, rapid flowing waters and dramatic drops, this one will take your breath away and leave you needing a good rest.
